Collaborative working is work undertaken as part of a group activity that is directed towards a shared goal or common purpose.

there is a social interaction to the work as well as the simple fulfillment of the task e.g. collaborative work requires a degree of trust between the participants if it is to be effective.

if we cannot work together face-to-face what makes us think we can work together any more productively when our communication is mediated by technology. In fact the very opposite is the case!

Improving collaborative work is not so much about using technology tools but more about a change of mind-set and the adoption of interpersonal tools
